Off Season (mid-Sept. to March 1st)

Off season practice is coed and casual.  It's a great time for new members to see what paddling is about, and "ease" into the sport.  No experience necessary!

 Saturday's at 8:30 AM until March 4th.

Write to ahab@kahakai.org for further info

Feel free to observe a practice, speak with club members, or join.  Most members don't bite (none are known to have rabies).

Race Schedule 2007

New Member Info:

Joining is as simple as showing up to practice.  Kahakai Outrigger Canoe Club is based at Marine Park (also known as Mother's Beach, 5839 Appian Way) in Long Beach, California [directions below].  Kahakai is a competitive outrigger canoe racing team that knows how to enjoy its after race activities as well.  Members have varying levels of experience, so there's a boat for everyone.  You might say that Kahakai is like one big family!

People who have never paddled before are encouraged to come out and give it a try.  Beginners (novice) are very much welcomed, and have a racing class all to themselves---don't worry, we won't start you out competing against the Hercules and the Argonauts.  New paddlers compete in the NOVICE division, where the races are shorter, and instruction is provided.  All paddlers should also know how to swim...but didn't that go without saying?

Dues are $250 per year for all, as well as assisting at fundraisers.  Dues are due 2 weeks before the first race (can be paid in installments).  Dues & fundraising cover race entries, boat maintenance, insurance, and other incidentals.  Potential members are encouraged to paddle with the club a few times before any financial commitments are made, to ensure that they are going to enjoy the sport---don't worry, we're not a 'health club', and won't be demanding your first born the second you set foot in the boat.  We do require, however, that all individuals wishing to paddle sign a standard release form (download form PDF).
